Every child has rights that help to keep them safe, healthy and protected offline and online. These rights are protected by law in the UK.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) defines a child as everyone under the age of 18. The UK has committed to upholding these rights, and in Scotland the UNCRC became part of Scottish law in 2024, strengthening children's legal protections.
Children have the right to:
- be safe from harm, abuse, and neglect
- access healthcare, education, and support
- have their views heard and respected
- be treated fairly and with dignity
Different laws across the UK set age limits and responsibilities in areas such as healthcare, employment, consent and criminal responsibility.
More recently, the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act 2026 introduced further measures to strengthen safeguarding, improve support for children in care and help agencies work together more effectively to protect children.
